El Día Mundial del Agua se celebra anualmente el 22 de marzo como un medio de llamar la atención sobre la importancia del agua dulce y ladefensa de la gestión sostenible de los recursos de agua dulce.
La creación de un día internacional dedicado al agua fue recomendado durante la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Medio Ambiente y el Desarrollo (CNUMAD) de 1992 en Río de Janeiro (Brasil). La Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas respondió a dicha recomendación designando el 22 de marzo de 1993 como el primer Día Mundial del Agua.

El 70% del Planeta Tierra es Agua. El otro 30% es tierra
El 3% del agua es dulce
El 69% del agua dulce está en los glaciares
30% del agua dulce es subterránea
Solamente el 1% del agua dulce está en la superficie
En 2015 éramos unos 7,500 millones de habitantes en la Tierra. Para 2030 será necesario abastecer de Agua a 8,500 millones de personas
En la actualidad 800 millones de personas carecen de acceso a agua potable
Entendemos por huella hídrica el consumo de agua por persona y año. Incluye el consumo e indirecto, es decir, el necesario para producir bienes y servicios.

España: 2.461 m3
Brasil: 2.027 m3
Japón: 1.379 m3
Reino Unido: 1.258 m3
Chile: 1.155 m3
India: 1.089 m3
