Aunque existen árboles aún más antiguos en el mundo, los olivos de Creta tienen la particularidad de que todavía producen aceitunas, las cuales son muy cotizadas. El agrónomo Nikos Mihelakis explica que:
Estimar la edad de los olivos a través de sus anillos internos, como se hace comúnmente con otros árboles, no es sencillo. Si la circunferencia es de más de10 metros, el árbol ciertamente es muy viejo. Para ponerlo en contexto, la circunferencia de un árbol de nuestros días es de entre medio metro y 1 metro.
El gobierno promueve los árboles como una atracción turística, y los pobladores se sienten orgullosos de su legado. Y es que la producción de aceite de oliva se remonta a la civilización minoica, que dominó la zona hace más de 3,000 años.
