Más que un verdadero respiro para los citadinos los muros y azoteas verdes se han convertido en una forma sustentable de diseños atractivos para edificios de empresas privadas, gubernamentales, casas y oficinas y aunque pareciera que es una práctica reciente, esta tecnología tuvo sus orígenes en Alemania entre los años 40 y 50 del siglo pasado.
Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) las ciudades deberían disponer de 10 a 15 m2 de espacios verdes por habitante. Pocos son los centros urbano que cumplen con este límite mínimo propuesto, que obviamente se refiere a verde urbano transitable y aprovechable, a falta del cual, la dimensión vertical y las cubiertas verdes representan una opción para el balance medio ambiental.
En la ciudad de México se estima que únicamente se cuenta con poco más de dos metros cuadrados de área verde por habitante.
Son múltiples los beneficios que podemos obtener aquí te menciono algunos:
- Filtran el aire de contaminantes propios del ambiente en el que vivimos inmersos
- Absorben humedad y el calor
- Capturan los gases de efecto invernadero como el dióxido de carbono y nos aportan oxígeno
- Aportan refrigeración en verano y aislamiento térmico en invierno

- Atraen fauna y hábitat de animales (aves)
- Mejoran la Calidad del Aire
- Mejoran la Salud
- Generan valor a la propiedad
- Reducen el estrés
- Dan un toque estético de sofisticación y cuidado al entorno
Además aquí un gran ejemplo de como en un estacionamiento en Lyon Francia, el muro verde absorbe y filtra todas las emosiones contaminantes convirtiendo este espacio en un pequeño pulmón citadino.
